Period 6 English I

November 29 -- 8:00 PM

Hello, Period 6

I hope you all had a healthy and peaceful week. You

were all in my prayers.

Now we have three weeks until Christmas Vacation, oops,

I mean, Winter Break. Our goal is to finish To Kill a Mockingbird

and write the essay on the novel. Now might be a good time

to familiarize yourself again with the possible essay prompts. They

are listed on google classroom.

I realize that we are spending 100% of our time on this

topic, but I believe it's the best way to teach a novel that

is a requirement for 9th grade. Plus, I don't want to burden

you with other assignments on top of what is assigned for

TKAM.

Please remember I am here for you 24/7 if you have any questions

or need help.

Zoom you tomorrow.

Mr. Maranto

DOCUMENT 1: CLASS SYLLABUS AND EXPECTATIONS

English I Course Syllabus

Mr. Maranto ~ Room R-5

Email: maranto@lvusd.org

Website: maranto.educatorpages.com

NOTE: The following syllabus was prepared for in-class teaching. Flexibility is a key to distance learning

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! English I is an intensive college preparatory course that examines the short story, the novel, drama, and poetry. Students are also required to extend their reading beyond the classroom with two independent reading books and corresponding projects. In addition, the class will focus on mastery of narrative, informative, and argumentative essays as well as a character analysis essay. Instruction in grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary is ongoing.

POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS

  1.  Be Prepared - Come to class on time and have all materials, INCLUDING A CHARGED LAPTOP every day. Homework is ready to be turned in BEFORE CLASS STARTS, and you are ready to discuss the previous night’s reading or assignment.

  1.  Be Courteous - Raise your hand and wait your turn to speak so that you are not talking over others, use respectful language, and respect different points of view.

  1.  Be Honest - Only submit work that is completely your own.

  1.  Be Accountable - YOU are in control of your success. “I didn’t know” is not a valid reason for missing deadlines. It is up to you to know what is due and what assignments require. The “DAILY AGENDA” on the front screen as you walk in each day, and the teacher website: maranto.educatorpages.com are your lifeline.  If you are unsure of what is expected, ask a classmate or email me at maranto@lvusd.org. I will gladly answer any questions you have.

Electronic Devices: The use of cell phones and music devices during class time is NOT PERMITTED unless approved by me for academic use.

Type All Work: English I students are required to type all assignments, unless otherwise specified. Coursework that is not typed will not be accepted. If your printer does not work, you have many options: use the technology in the library, e-mail me evidence of your work (you must turn in a hard copy of the assignment at support the next day), or e-mail the work to a friend or classmate who is able to print the assignment for you. Always include an MLA heading on your work for full credit.

Plagiarism: Your work must be your own ideas and organization. Using another person’s idea, even if you change their wording, and do not cite them as the source, it is still plagiarism. Using any information and presenting it as your own original work will result in disciplinary action and a zero on the assignment.

Cheating: Cheating will not be tolerated. Any form of cheating (the use of cheat sheets, text messaging, writing answers on the desk, talking during a test, copying or sharing answers on tests or homework, etc.) will result in disciplinary repercussions and a zero on the test/assignment. Parents will be notified of the incident, and appropriate action will be taken by the administration depending on the level of the offense. Please see the school Academic Honesty and Plagiarism Awareness Contract for more information regarding Agoura High School’s specific policies on plagiarism and cheating.

Turnitin.com: All essays must be submitted to Turnitin.com (unless otherwise specified). No paper will receive credit if it has not been submitted to the site. Additionally, the paper submitted to TurnItIn.com must be the exact same as the hard copy that is turned in to me, or you will not receive credit for the assignment. Even if you turn in a hard copy of an assignment in class, it will not count as on time unless it was already submitted to Turnitin.com. Please refer to the Turnitin.com handout for more information.

Attendance: Students will handle attendance matters with the main office outside of class. Parent notes are not accepted by the teacher. Every student is expected to come to class on time and be prepared for the day’s lesson. Being on time means being in your assigned seat when the bell rings. School policy mandates that six unexcused tardies or three unexcused absences in one semester will result in a drop/fail. Please remember that missing school REALLY means missing out – one day of class missed = 2 traditional days of class.

Make-up Policy: Students are responsible for all assignments given in class whether they are present at the time the work was assigned or not. Assignments will be posted regularly on my website, so be sure to check the website when you are absent. Additionally, ask a reliable and responsible classmate for information, notes, and assignments that you missed, and/or email me with any questions. Only students with excused absences may make up work.

  •  All tests and quizzes missed during an excused absence must be made up within one week of returning to school. It is the student’s responsibility to attend Support Period to make up missed work and tests; students must be present by 8:00 am sharp. After one week, the test or quiz will be zeroed out and no make up will be allowed.

  •  Students with excused absences may make up missed classwork and homework. Students will have the number of days absent plus one to make up this work.

Extenuating circumstances: For family emergencies and long-term illness, please contact me to arrange a schedule that is reasonable for your circumstance.

Late Work Policy: You are expected to have your work completed BEFORE entering class. Work handed in any time after it has been collected is considered late. All late work must be turned in during Support Period.

  •  Late homework (as the result of negligence or unexcused absence) will be accepted during the next Support Period for half credit (50%). AFTER THAT, NO LATE WORK WILL RECEIVE CREDIT.

  •  All long-term assignments, projects, and all writing assignments must be handed in/ presented on the assigned due date. If a student is absent from class, they are still responsible for ensuring that work is submitted to my mailbox or delivered to me through another student. 5 points will be taken off the final grade for each day the long-term assignment/writing assignment is late.

  • All writing assignments consist of a two-part submission; the hard copy and submission to Turnitin.com must both be on time. Assignments are due to Turnitin.com by midnight the night before class. Any assignment submitted to Turnitin.com after that time is late and will receive 5 points off the paper’s final grade for each day the paper is late.

Grading: Grades will be determined by the percentage of the total points earned in the weighted categories explained below. No grades will be rounded up and there is no extra credit (English Department Policy): an 89.9 is a B+ and a 79.9 is a C+. Points will be totaled and distributed as follows:

      Writing / Grammar -- 40%

      Reading / Vocabulary -- 40%

      Speaking / Listening --20%

Percentages are recorded as follows:

A+ (98-100%)         B+ (88-89.9%)        C+ (78-79.9%)        D+ (68-69.9%)

A (93-97.9%)         B (83-87.9%)        C (73-77.9%)        D (63-67.9%)

A- (90- 92.9%)        B- (80-82.9%)        C- (70-72.9%)        D- (60-62.9%)

 F (0-59.0%)

Student Support: Student support is every day from 7:50-8:30am.  Students who are absent MUST come to student support to: get help on assignments, get handouts, turn in excused absent work, make up quizzes or tests, or to turn in a one-day-late assignment. Do NOT come up to me at the beginning of class for make-up work. Make it a habit to be on the AHS campus by 8:00 a.m. every day, even if you don’t need to attend support.  Students who establish this habit are much more successful!

Aeries: Your English grades are regularly updated on the Aeries grading program. Please visit this website to access current attendance and grading records. This is an excellent way to track progress and monitor missing work and tests.

Teacher Website: Please visit my teacher website OFTEN!  It contains all daily agenda and homework, plus educational resources to help you be successful in my class.  My teacher website can be accessed through the school website, or go directly to: www.maranto.educatorpages.com

Videos: Throughout the year, we may choose to augment our studies with various videos. In addition to the films To Kill A Mockingbird and Romeo and Juliet, we will view short videos that enrich an area of study. Your signature below signifies that you are aware of these viewings and allow your child to participate.

Teacher Contact:  The best way for a student, parent/guardian to reach me is by email.  I will return emails as quickly as possible.  To access the agenda and homework, go to my website.

Mr. Jack Maranto
Agoura High School
August 16, 2020

Dear Parents,
As we begin distance learning, I wanted to reach out to all of you to make sure you have information
regarding the program I have set up for your student for their English class. I also want to share some
suggestions for helping you to structure your student’s day, as well as provide any support you may need at
this time.

The main platform I am using for all assignments is Google Classroom. I have instructed students to “check
in” each day and time they would normally have my class. They will find the daily agenda, homework, and
any work assigned for that day. There are due dates for all assignments, and they will submit those
assignments through Google Classroom.

I have also instructed students to check the classroom website regularly. The work for the entire week is
updated and posted every Sunday. The advantage of checking the website regularly is students can see the
whole week of work. My website can be reached through www.maranto.educatorpages.com
In addition to Google Classroom and the class website, I have also reminded students to reach out to me with
questions ANYTIME through school email. My email is maranto@lvusd.org. Feel free to contact me with
any questions or concerns regarding your student.

On Wednesday, August 19, I will be hosting a live Zoom Meet with all my classes. Students will be receiving
an “invite” with a time to join the class on Wednesday. Please encourage your student to join this meeting on
Wednesday using their district email only. I will be posting a virtual meeting protocol handout that reminds
students of proper behavior during these live meets.

Basic suggestions to help your student experience success, engagement and structure from home:
● Encourage your student to check in (website & Google Classroom) and do their schoolwork during
regular school hours
● Encourage your student to participate in any live video meets, whether it’s a whole class meet, or
meets with smaller groups like literature circles
● Encourage your student to balance their day by getting some exercise outside of the regular school
day – taking the dog for a walk, going for a run or a bike ride in your neighDistance learning can be
challenging, as it requires families to create structure for their students from home. Here are some
bborhood
● Encourage your student to learn a new skill or start a new hobby they can do from home – I will be
posting some ideas on Google Classroom

I look forward to educating your student through distance learning. Although it is challenging, we will all get
through this by working together.

Warmest Regards,
Mr. Jack Maranto
