I hope you all had a healthy and peaceful week. You

were all in my prayers.

Now we have three weeks until Christmas Vacation, oops,

I mean, Winter Break. Our goal is to finish Lord of the Flies

and write the essay on the novel. Now might be a good time

to familiarize yourself again with the possible essay prompts. They

are listed on google classroom.

I realize that we are spending 100% of our time on this

topic, but I believe it's the best way to teach a novel that

is a requirement for 10th grade. Plus, I don't want to burden

you with other assignments on top of what is assigned for

LOF.

DOCUMENT 1: CLASS SYLLABUS AND EXPECTATIONS

English II

Note: The following was prepared for in-class instruction. Flexibility is a key to distance learning.

       

Descriptions and Standards

 

Course description: English II is an intensive college preparatory course that follows district and Common Core Standards. The curriculum covers various types of literature such as the short story, play, novel, and poem by theme; refining the expository analytical essay as well as descriptive and narrative writing, and research.  Students will continue to develop their language skills through the study of college preparatory vocabulary, grammar, and oral speaking.  

 

Grading: Grades will be based on a point and percentage system.  Grades will be assigned as follows: A = 90 – 100%; B = 80 – 89%; C = 70 – 79%; D = 60-69%; F = 59% and below.  Grades are not rounded. The final semester grade will be weighted as follows: Writing/Grammar -- 40%; Reading/Vocabulary -- 40%; Speaking/Listening -- 20%. Formative and summative assessments will be conducted throughout each semester in all of these categories. 

 

Speaking and Listening grade: As part of meeting the requirements of district and Common Core Standards for Language Arts, the English Department has determined that 20% of a sophomore student’s grade should be based on classroom involvement and accountability.  Points will be deducted for absences, unexcused tardies, failure to participate in class activities, disrupting class, missing books or materials, and infraction of class rules listed below. Students will receive a Speaking and Listening Criteria handout on the first day of class and available on the class website.

 

Assignments: Students are responsible for all assignments given in class, whether they are present at the time the work was assigned or not. Class activities will be regularly posted on the class website; questions regarding work can be directed to my email. In every English II class, all written work must be typed on 8-1/2 x 11 paper. Always include name, period, date, and assignment title, or work will not be accepted for a grade. Students will be required to upload their major assignments to Turnitin.com and will be given further procedural information on this at a later date.

 

Make-up policy: Students will have one week after they return to school after an excused absence to make up any missed work including homework, tests, quizzes. Otherwise, late work will receive only partial, if any credit.  Be sure to see my website, or come in during Support Period immediately after you return from an absence so you know what you have missed. Extenuating circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Communication with teacher is essential if work missed during an excused absence cannot be made up per these stipulations. All missed work should be made up during Support Period, as Nutrition, Lunch, and after school times do not provide enough time or appropriate quiet environment for study.

 

Texts: The course uses Study Sync website for vocabulary, grammar, literature, and writing, as well as individual novels, and materials in handout form. Class handouts and informational materials will be provided by the teacher on the class website. It is imperative that students download these materials for annotating, class discussion, and writing; therefore, students should be prepared for heavy computer and printer use. Students are expected to bring all materials needed to class each day, including their computer. Trips to lockers or the computer lab/library will not be allowed during class and students’ Speaking and Listening grade will be lowered if they do not bring materials needed for class each day.

 

Attendance policy: Students should be in their seats and ready to work when the tardy bell rings, or they will be marked tardy.  Per LVUSD policy, six unexcused tardies or three unexcused absences will result in an attendance referral.  NO EXCEPTIONS! 


 

Cheating & Plagiarism: Cheating and plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following: copying or looking at another student’s paper during a test or quiz, talking during a test, having information that is being tested visible during a test (cheat sheet, open textbook, notes, etc.), copying another student’s homework or classwork.  Please see the Plagiarism Awareness Form and the Las Virgenes Unified School District policy, available on the class website, regarding plagiarism.  There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy.  There is no excuse for cheating, so don’t risk getting caught.  The consequences are simply too severe.

 

Support Period: Students should use Support Period for all kinds of support they may need during the year including learning about missed work, making up missed work or tests, discussing class work or homework, clarifying lessons or lectures, getting extra help on any assignment, brushing up on skills, reviewing essays and essay grades, and clarification of any class issue that arises.  Please become familiar with information posted on the class website BEFORE you come in to Support.

 

Website and Email: At the beginning of each week, and at the end of each day, I will update the website for this class. Every detail of the class that you need to know is replicated and fully explained on this site, which is maintained only for you. I require students to use the website daily, as assignments for downloading and important information, including updated information since the class met will be there. Therefore, a daily viewing of this site is an important requirement of this class. I rely upon it, and so should you. I read my email at least once a day; it is a quick and easy way to address any questions students may have while doing homework, and I will try my best to get back to you right away. Because the website and email are in place and active, I expect students to always be “in the know” about class activities and assignments.

 

Classroom Etiquette: Etiquette is the correct social behavior required in certain situations.  Often, students are unaware of, or forget the impact correct behavior has on their learning and the learning of others. In fact, for learning to occur, students must be comfortable in class. In order to accomplish a comfortable classroom in which all students feel confident, all students must treat each other with respect.  Students will raise their hands to participate, not interrupt each other, not have unrelated conversations with other students in class during class activities and discussions, not criticize or make fun of each other, and not use profanity. Students who do not uphold an appropriate level of etiquette will be given a friendly reminder; those who continue to disturb the class will see the consequences of such actions in their Speaking and Listening grade, and may be referred to an assistant principal for guidance. Maintaining classroom etiquette is simple; it provides an opportunity for everyone to feel comfortable, to participate, and to learn.

 

Class rules:

  • Enter the classroom quietly and be ready to work when the bell rings.

  • No packing up prior to two minutes before the end-of-class bell rings.

  • Snacks ONLY are allowed during class. Please make sure not to leave your Nutrition or Lunch meals to eat during class as it is disruptive.

  • No writing on desks or elsewhere in classroom. Please, please let's keep a clean room! ☺

  • A lecture is a time to listen; a discussion is a time to talk.

  • NO PERSONAL CELL PHONE USE ALLOWED DURING CLASS; please turn them off to avoid them being taken away.

  • Personal matters (restroom, grooming, other class homework, etc.) are to be taken care of before or after class.  Except in emergencies, please do not use bathroom breaks as an opportunity to wander campus.

 

Communication:

Finally, please come see me about any class issue.  It’s so much easier for me to help you if I know what’s going on. Most problems can be solved, or avoided completely by simple communication.  Be smart and ask for the help you need. I encourage both parents and students to use my email below, as I check it daily. I will also be happy to return your phone calls; I will check my voicemail every other day.☺

Dear Parents,
As we begin distance learning, I wanted to reach out to all of you to make sure you have information
regarding the program I have set up for your student for their English class. I also want to share some
suggestions for helping you to structure your student’s day, as well as provide any support you may need at
this time.

The main platform I am using for all assignments is Google Classroom. I have instructed students to “check
in” each day and time they would normally have my class. They will find the daily agenda, homework, and
any work assigned for that day. There are due dates for all assignments, and they will submit those
assignments through Google Classroom.

I have also instructed students to check the classroom website regularly. The work for the entire week is
updated and posted every Sunday. The advantage of checking the website regularly is students can see the
whole week of work. My website can be reached through www.maranto.educatorpages.com
In addition to Google Classroom and the class website, I have also reminded students to reach out to me with
questions ANYTIME through school email. My email is maranto@lvusd.org. Feel free to contact me with
any questions or concerns regarding your student.

On Wednesday, August 19, I will be hosting a live Zoom Meet with all my classes. Students will be receiving
an “invite” with a time to join the class on Wednesday. Please encourage your student to join this meeting on
Wednesday using their district email only. I will be posting a virtual meeting protocol handout that reminds
students of proper behavior during these live meets.

Basic suggestions to help your student experience success, engagement and structure from home:
● Encourage your student to check in (website & Google Classroom) and do their schoolwork during
regular school hours
● Encourage your student to participate in any live video meets, whether it’s a whole class meet, or
meets with smaller groups like literature circles
● Encourage your student to balance their day by getting some exercise outside of the regular school
day – taking the dog for a walk, going for a run or a bike ride in your neighDistance learning can be
challenging, as it requires families to create structure for their students from home. Here are some

● Encourage your student to learn a new skill or start a new hobby they can do from home – I will be

DOCUMENT 3: Academic Honesty and Plagiarism Awareness

Academic Honesty and Plagiarism Awareness Contract

 

As defined by the Las Virgenes Unified School District Board Policy, Academic Honesty includes, but is not limited to:

 

  1. Cheating:
    1. Copying from others and presenting the work as your own.
    2. Use of notes, “cheat sheets” (written, electronic, or any record containing answers, formulas, information, or notes of any kind) or other information in a programmable calculator or other electronic device [e.g., cell phone, mp3, iPod, etc.] without EXPLICIT teacher review and permission.
    3. Having or using a communication device, such as a cell phone, pager, PDA, or electronic translator to send or obtain unauthorized information.
    4. Doing assigned work or taking an exam for another student, or permitting someone else to take an exam or do assigned work for you.
    5. Asking another [e.g., student, parent, teacher, tutor, etc.] to give you improper assistance, including offering money or other benefits.
    6. Asking for or accepting money or any other benefit in return for giving improper assistance.
    7. Providing or receiving information about all or part of an exam, including questions and/or answer (e.g. telling someone in a subsequent period what was on your exam, or being told this information).
    8. Altering a graded exam and resubmitting it for a better grade without teacher authorization.
    9. Gaining or providing unauthorized access to examination materials, including teacher materials.
    10. Giving or getting improper assistance on an assignment meant to be individual work.

 

  1. Plagiarism:

Plagiarism is defined as “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own; use (a created production) without crediting the source; to commit literary theft; present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.” (Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary)

    1. Including in any assignment turned in for credit any materials not based on your own research and writing.  This includes, but is not limited to:
      •                                                                i.      Using the services of any third party term paper assistance, including, but not limited to, internet sites.
      •                                                              ii.      Copying part or all of another person’s paper and submitting it as your own for an assignment.
      •                                                             iii.      Working with others on an assignment without permission and representing the work as if it was completed independently.
    2. Submitting the same academic work for credit in more than one course without consulting all teachers involved.
    3. Failing to properly acknowledge paraphrased materials via textual attribution, footnotes, endnotes, and/or a bibliography [works cited].
    4. Falsifying data.
    5. Citing nonexistent sources (articles, books, etc.)

 

  1. Other:
    1. Tampering with any official district records (attendance, grades, discipline) of any kind (electronic or otherwise), computer records, or misrepresenting/misreporting scores.
    2. Failing to promptly stop work on an exam when the time allocated has elapsed.
    3. Forging a signature and/or knowingly furnishing false information to a faculty member.
    4. Hoarding or damaging library materials with the intent of hampering access to others.

 

Note: Attempted academic dishonesty, even if unsuccessful, will be treated as academic dishonesty.

 

 

Academic Honesty/High School – Grades 9-12

Academic Honesty Violation – Level 1

  • Plagiarizing
  • Copying of daily homework
  • Copying of daily classroom assignments
  1. First Infraction
    1. The teacher will conference with the student and record a grade of Fail (F) for that assignment.
    2. Within five (5) school days, the teacher will notify the parent and send a referral to the appropriate administrator and counselor noting the infraction.
    3. The record of the referral remains in effect for the remainder of high school.
  2. Second infraction
    1. The teacher will conference with the student and record an grade of Fail (F) for that assignment.
    2. Within five (5) school days, the teacher will notify the parent and send a referral to the appropriate administrator and counselor noting the infraction.
    3. The student will be placed on contract, with the understanding that a second infraction in the same or any other class will result in the student’s removal from the course in which the second infraction occurred.  The contract will remain in effect for two (2) years from the date of the infraction.
  3. Third Infraction in Same or Any Other Class
    1. The teacher will send a referral to the appropriate administrator and counselor noting the infraction.
    2. Within five (5) school days, the parent will be notified and the student will be drop/failed from the course with a grade of Fail (F) for the semester.
    3. The student will be placed on Academic Honesty Probation for the remainder of high school.

 

Academic Honesty Violation – Level 2

  • Cheating on classroom tests, quizzes, major projects
  • Fabrication/Falsification
  • Theft or alteration of materials or equipment
  • Plagiarism
  • Forgery
  • Unauthorized collaboration
  • Long term homework assignments

 

  1. First Infraction
    1. The teacher will conference with the student and record a grade of Fail (F) for that assignment.
    2. The teacher will send a referral to the appropriate administrator and counselor noting the infraction.
    3. Within five (5) school days, the teacher will notify the parent and send a referral to the appropriate administrator and counselor noting the infraction.
    4. The student will be placed on contract, with the understanding that a second infraction in the same or any other class will result in the student’s removal from the course in which the second infraction occurred.  The contract will remain in effect for two (2) years from the date of the infraction.
  2. Second Infraction in Same or Any Other Class
    1. The teacher will send a referral to the appropriate administrator and counselor noting the infraction.
    2. Within five (5) school days, the teacher will notify the parent.  A parent conference will be scheduled with the Assistance Principal and teacher
    3. The student will be drop/failed from the course with a grade of Fail (F) for the semester.

At all levels, if a student is enrolled in a special education program, the appropriate case manager must be informed before any changes can be made in the student’s program.  Violations of the Academic Honesty Policy may result in transfer, suspension, and/or expulsion.

 

Appeal of Decision

If a parent/guardian does not agree with the teacher and/or administrator’s decision after the student and parent have conferred with the teacher and administrator, the parent/guardian will contact the principal in writing to initiate an Appeal.

 

Agoura High School Students will abide by the Las Virgenes Unified School District Board Policy on Academic Honesty.
